Distal Biceps Tendinopathy in Mona Vale
Distal biceps tendinopathy can cause pain at the front of the elbow, particularly with lifting, pulling and gym-based exercises. At Helix Recovery, we assess the factors contributing to your symptoms and develop a progressive treatment and rehabilitation plan to rebuild strength and tendon capacity.
What is Distal Biceps Tendinopathy?
The distal biceps tendon connects the biceps muscle to the radius bone in the forearm. It plays an important role in bending the elbow and rotating the palm upwards.
Distal biceps tendinopathy develops when the tendon becomes painful and less tolerant of the loads being placed through it. Symptoms may develop gradually following repeated lifting, pulling or strength training, particularly after increases or changes in activity.
Common Symptoms
Pain at the front of the elbow
Tenderness around the distal biceps tendon
Pain with lifting or carrying
Pain with pulling exercises
Pain with resisted elbow bending
Pain when rotating the palm upwards
Reduced tolerance for gym training
Symptoms aggravated by repetitive loading
How We Assess Distal Biceps Tendinopathy
Several structures around the front of the elbow can produce similar symptoms, so assessment is important to determine whether the distal biceps tendon is likely to be the primary source of your pain.
Assessment may include palpation, resisted elbow flexion and forearm rotation, strength testing, elbow and shoulder movement and functional activities that reproduce your symptoms.
The aim is to identify the likely source of your symptoms, determine how much load the tendon currently tolerates and identify factors that can be addressed through treatment and progressive rehabilitation.
How We Treat Distal Biceps Tendinopathy
Treatment depends on how long symptoms have been present, their severity and the activities you want to return to.
Treatment may include:
Osteopathic manual therapy
Shockwave therapy
Progressive exercise rehabilitation
Biceps and upper-limb strengthening
Activity and load modification
Gradual return to lifting, gym, work or sport
Shockwave Therapy for Distal Biceps Tendinopathy
Shockwave therapy may be recommended for persistent distal biceps tendinopathy, particularly when symptoms have been present for several months or progress has plateaued despite appropriate rehabilitation.
Shockwave therapy may help reduce pain and local tendon sensitivity, allowing progressive strengthening to continue. It is not a standalone treatment and is typically used alongside a structured loading program as part of a comprehensive rehabilitation plan.
Common Questions
-
Symptoms often develop when the amount or intensity of loading through the biceps tendon exceeds its current capacity. Changes in gym training, repetitive lifting and pulling activities can all contribute.
-
Usually, yes. Painful exercises or loads may initially need to be modified, but complete rest is rarely the long-term solution. Training can be progressively increased as the tendon becomes more tolerant.
-
Shockwave therapy may be considered for persistent tendon pain, particularly when progress with rehabilitation has plateaued. Progressive strengthening remains an important part of restoring tendon capacity.
-
No. Tendinopathy usually develops gradually and involves pain and reduced load tolerance. A distal biceps rupture is typically a more sudden injury and may cause a pop, bruising, deformity or significant weakness. A suspected rupture should be assessed promptly.
Is Biceps Tendon Pain stopping you Training?
If pain at the front of your elbow is limiting lifting, pulling, gym training, work or sport, we can assess what's contributing and develop a progressive treatment and rehabilitation plan.
